Fargo Hamfest

Ben (10 - N2BEN) and I went up to Fargo for the hamfest this weekend.

Turn out for both the attendance and the flea market tables was lower than past shows. We still had a great time and plan to attend again next year.

I have not inventoried our backpack yet to determine what we bought. I think that we probably spent about $32 on parts. As time permits I will try to grab some images of the parts for some future homebrew projects.

Tuesday night rain

I am in the metro for work related activities for a couple of days. Tonight as I was leave the office it was raining like there was no tomorrow. While eating dinner the rain got crazy intense.

I am not sure how much rain we actually got back at home... It looks like about 1 inch on the radar.

ps... a picture from my phone of the rain gauge once I got home Wednesday. A little over 1.5" in there.

RadarLab HD on Ubuntu

I use RadarLab HD on my Linux machines for Level 3 radar info. I like the application because it is Java based which means that it will run (in theory) on both Windows and Linux.

My desktop PC is an AMD64 bit based system. I have Ubuntu 11.04 64bit installed. This is my only 64 bit machine in the house and frequently end up trying to figure out to get 32bit applications to run on the 64bit OS. In this case I need to install the Sun Java implementation so that I can use the *.JNLP extension with the Java Webstart utilities.

After a bit of searching (since I have had to hunt for this before) I found it again:
sudo apt-get install ia32-sun-java6-bin
Once that was completed I am able to launch RadarLab HD on this machine.

Monday morning rain

Camera phone pic of the shelf cloud prior to get hit by the gust front

Part of a RadarScope (great app for the ipad) image of the radar rain fall estimate

At our home in Kingston we received 1.25" of rain this morning. We had 4 waves of storms that brushed our house but none of them went to the extreme point of being severe. Besides the heavy rains we also had some straight line winds.

It made for an interesting morning... trying to do my skywarn activities while handling some conference calls and 1:1's on the work front.

It sounds like we may have some storms in another couple of hours.

Saturday storms

We had some storms roll through Saturday evening around dusk. I went out and did the skywarn thing for a while. Once things slowed down I spotted some lightning strikes that were not completely rain wrapped so I pulled out the camera to get some photos.

We received about .25" of rain at our home which was extremely light. Other places nearby received quite a bit more along with some dime sized hail.
